What is Medicare Advantage?
It's the new name for Medicare + Choice plans. Another name is Private Fee for Service (PFFS), POS, PPOs, managed care plans, or specialty plans. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, that particular company pays your claims instead of Medicare. These programs are Medicare replacement programs. You still pay your Medicare premiums and the company becomes your Medicare and your Supplement and Part D Drugs (all rolled into one).
In Utah we have PFFS, POS, PPO, and HMO plans - all Medicare Advantage plans.
Advantages
Can be inexpensive, some as low as $0 premium.
Can cover benefits that Medicare Supplements and Medicare may not cover.
Can cover anyone on Medicare, even someone with health problems.
Covers more preventative care, such as preventative dental, eye exams, physicals, and an eyeglass benefit.
Disadvantages
Can have out of pocket costs, some very large, especially the lowest premium plans.
Can be cancelled. However, there are guarantees to purchase certain Medigap policies in case you are cancelled.
Benefits can change at the end of any calendar year.
Medicare Advantage plans can be as low as $0 premium. Obviously, the lower the premium, the higher the co-payments and out of pocket exposure. Just the reverse is true on the higher premium plans.
